Gas Prices

After spending time overseas, I came back thinking how spoiled Americans are with all these vehicles. In other countries, not everyone has a car. Most people walk or ride bicycles. When I was in the Marines, I lived off base for awhile. I would ride a 10 speed bike to and from work everyday. It was 16 miles to work and back. But now.............that is when I was a flat belly.......and in top shape.
We have become so dependent on Oil that it is now a question of life and death, of a War that may never end. I suppose without this fuel, that our economy would slowly flutter to a standstill.
The Republicans came up with a $100 rebate to all Americans. This is kind of like tipping the waitress a quarter....Don't you think?
Concerning Exxon's $8 billion 1st qtr. profit?..............Congress wants to punish these companies for making to much money by over taxing them......hehehe!!! Exxon would then be in good company with others in the past...........Bill Gates and Microsoft.........Big Tobacco.......how bout the Fortune teller lady, she made 50 million her first year, and they shut her down. What about Big Religion, Jimmy Swaggart for instance was slandered, as were others in an effort to shut them down. They collect millions daily! If you think by now I'm leaning towards conspiracy.......your right!
I think the government should give up both state and Federal Taxes on gasoline until this crisis is over. Or will it ever be over. You can bet your booty the Oil companies don't want it over. War is good for Big Oil. Is it no coincidence that our President and Vice President are Oil men.

Fish Story

Another Family member sent me this tonight, thought it would make a good 'Saturday Night Story".

THE BIG ONE THAT DID NOT GET AWAY --- 2006 fish story on how to land the big one!

Caught on the Fraser River just above the Mission bridge two weeks ago. Weighed over 1,000lbs and measured 11'1". 56" around the girth and took over 6 and a half hours and 4 dozen beer for the 4 guys taking turns reeling.

How old do you thank this fish is?...Hmmmmmmmmm!

Mose's is coming on a Motorbike

I've often wondered what would happen if we had a modern day Mose's come back today. The movie "The Ten Commandments" is on TV tonight. It was so cool when Charlton Hesston open that big Sea. What about when he turn the river into a river of blood, or he turned his staff into a snake. Hmmmmmmmmmmm......and what if there were a modern day Mose's coming soon. Shall we make a wish list?

- Could he give us one descent, truthful politician, who is not a yes man and not on the take. Kind of like Mr. Smith goes to Washington. Maybe Mose's would take over from here and decide he is going to clone Jimmy Stewart, and yes ...all of the clones will run congress. Who would Mose's clone for our next President?

- Will Mose's stop our world from melting, will he save all of the animals now extinct and in the future. Will he save the 20,000 plants they say will be extinct in the next 40 years. Will he turn oil to blood!..............as if it isn't already. Mr. Mose's .......what is your energy policy?.......lol!

- Will Mose's go to the poor nations of the world and first wipe out the decease there, and then turn their rivers and mountains into gold and diamonds.

- Will he stop WAR for all time. Teach rich men how to be poor. Teach the poor how to be enriched.

- Will Mose's help us with grief. Of loves, we have won and lost. Of the death of loves ones who we miss forever! Will nightmares be a thing of the past?

- If he could help all of us, with raising our families, with the stress of work and paying bills, teach all of us how to slow down and with our eyes wide open, look at the world we live in, what it was in the beginning and what it is now.

Oh................Mose's..Mose's..Where are you?

Air Guitar

Mumps Epidemic

The worst epidemic of Mumps in twenty years is being reported today in Iowa. They started vaccinating for the Mumps (MMR) in 1967. Few cases are reported yearly, but Iowa is now on the CDC radar. They say the strain could have been brought over, from Great Britain, by a college student, and spread from there.

For us old timers, before the vaccine available in 1967, you had the opportunity to go through the Mumps. I remember I was so sick. But, what I remember most was my sisters look like "Cabbage Patch Doll's", with their cheeks all swelled up.

Mumps is a viral infection of the salivary glands. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches and swelling of the glands close to the jaw. It can cause serious complications, including meningitis, damage to the testicles and deafness.

Funny.....how this infection attacks men so discriminately...lol!

The Big Pond

This is a prototype of the "Buck Owens All American" guitar sold in the Sear's catalog during the late 1960s.

Buck Owens died today at the age of 76. Most will know him and remember him as the narrator of the old hit TV series "HEE HAW". But for me, I remember my Daddy loved his music, and he had an old 8 track he had bought and I played it till it was wore out. "Act Naturally" was his big hit, and then the Beatles later did a remake of the song.
He basically founded the genre "Bakersfield Country". Catering to the truckers that traveled highway 99 between Los Angelos and San Francisco. The genre has somewhat evolved, and Dwight Yoakum is now the legacy to Buck Owens, falling into the same Genre.

Tim's lunker

If I remember right this is the exact spot that Tim caught his first lunker that weighed 7lbs. He was an ugly trout, deformed in some way! he was like 12 inches long and his girth was like 23 inches. He was like the Star trek Lunker of Bennett Springs. Trout season opened at Bennett Springs March 1. Go look at this fishing report. Makes you want to go there now!

Dad's Advise

The worst advice I ever got from dad was about fighting. He always said, let the other guy hit you first. No way! If someone ever threatened me or picked a fight, they were obliged with a quick and swift result. I was walking up the pier one day being followed by six drunken sailors. They kept calling me names, trying to pick a fight. I heard.....jarhead.......your momma...and then gonna beat your ass! I stopped, walked up to the big mouth, and quickly put a fist to his face. I broke his jaw with one fist. The other sailors just stared as I went on walking down the pier. I was later reported. The other sailors vouched for me. It was a fair fight! I was usually the one getting lessons in life, but this time, I gave the sailor his own lesson. Sucking on soup for two months with that filthy mouth wired shut.

Marine Corp Handbook

I remember in the early sixties that we practiced the nuclear bomb drill at school. We hid under our desk or we would organize ourselves in the halls. Was this a joke! When I joined the Marines it became clear. In the Marine Corp handbook, it said, in case of nuclear attack to lay on the ground and cover yourself with a poncho.....I later added " and kiss your ass goodbye".

Going Postal

First off, most employees for the post office are war veterans. Veterans, who are unskilled, who when returning from war did not want to become cops or didn't want to go to college. They could even be a cop within the post office called postal inspectors, if that is the path they chose. When anthrax killed a postal worker in New Jersey in 2001, the workers were ordered back to work the next day, or else they were told, they would be fired. Well months have past, the building closed and surrounded by cyclone fence, and lawsuits have been filed accordingly. The audacity of the management to think that the mail will run through " rain, snow, and ANTHRAX ". Then they send out to all Americans a brochure in the mail warning of anthrax. Mailed from? You guessed it, right from Washington where more anthrax had been found. By the way, the building will be clear of anthrax in the year 3001. The government gave the post office billions to bail them out of their proclaimed loses, only to turn around and claim a profit at year end, and then raised the stamp price three cents. The same Jack Ass Management is still there!

Tom Fox

My story tonight concerns Tom Fox. Part of a Christian Peacekeeping team, known as CPT'ers. There are many in Iraq at present. The work of the CPT'ers is selfless, hard work, and dangerous. My heart goes out to his family. What a tragedy!
Tom and his co-workers were kidnapped in November. They all had been recently seen on a video tape that was released on Feb. 28.
Yes, they found Tom Fox last night. He was shot in the head and chest. He was apparently tortured before he was shot in the head and chest and his body dumped near a railroad line in Baghdad. Three of his co-workers are still missing.
The previously unknown Swords of Righteousness Brigades claimed responsibility for kidnapping the four Christian Peacemaker Teams members, who disappeared Nov. 26. I hope our CIA has these thugs in their scopes.
My interest is two fold here. Tom Fox was a Quaker, and belong to the Langley Hill Friends Meetinghouse, McLean, Virginia. The other is his genealogy.
Interesting, that Quakerism was established around 1652. The founders name was George Fox. There are many family names synonymous with Quakers in America, ADAMSON, ANTRIM, ANCRAM, BEALS, BLACKBURN, BOWATER, BOYES, CLAYTON, DICKS, EDGE, HORNER, JONES, McGREW, MORTON, PARR and ZELLEY.
William Penn was a Quaker, and close friend with George Fox. William Penn as a peace maker, made several treaties with the Delaware Indians, so early Americans, and Native Americans could live in peace.
There is no doubt that Tom Fox was a descendent of George Fox. More importantly, Quakerism has probably been past down through generation after generation in all of these families.

Fight or Flight?
"If an attacker inspires anger or fear in my heart, it means that I have not purged myself of violence. To realize nonviolence means to feel within you its strength--soul force--to know God. A person who has known God will be incapable of harboring anger or fear within him [or her], no matter how overpowering the cause for that anger or fear may be." (Gandhi speaking to Badshah Kahn’s Khudai Khidmatgar officers; "A Man to Match His Mountains" by Eknath Easwaran, pg. 157.)When I allow myself to become angry I disconnect from God and connect with the evil force that empowers fighting. When I allow myself to become fearful I disconnect from God and connect with the evil force that encourages flight. I take Gandhi and Jesus at their word--if I am not one with God then I am one with Satan. I don’t think Gandhi would use that word but Jesus certainly did, on numerous occasions. The French theologian Rene Girard has a very powerful vision of Satan that speaks to me: "Satan sustains himself as a parasite on what God creates by imitating God in a manner that is jealous, grotesque, perverse and as contrary as possible to the loving and obedient imitation of Jesus" ("I Saw Satan Fall Like Lighting", R. Girard, pg. 45).If I am not to fight or flee in the face of armed aggression, be it the overt aggression of the army or the subversive aggression of the terrorist, then what am I to do? "Stand firm against evil" (Matthew 5:39, translated by Walter Wink) seems to be the guidance of Jesus and Gandhi in order to stay connected with God. But here in Iraq I struggle with that second form of aggression. I have visual references and written models of CPTers standing firm against the overt aggression of an army, be it regular or paramilitary. But how do you stand firm against a car--bomber or a kidnapper? Clearly the soldier being disconnected from God needs to have me fight. Just as clearly the terrorist being disconnected from God needs to have me flee. Both are willing to kill me using different means to achieve the same end. That end being to increase the parasitic power of Satan within God’s good creation.It seems easier somehow to confront anger within my heart than it is to confront fear. But if Jesus and Gandhi are right then I am not to give in to either. I am to stand firm against the kidnapper as I am to stand firm against the soldier. Does that mean I walk into a raging battle to confront the soldiers? Does that mean I walk the streets of Baghdad with a sign saying "American for the Taking"? No to both counts. But if Jesus and Gandhi are right, then I am asked to risk my life and if I lose it to be as forgiving as they were when murdered by the forces of Satan. I struggle to stand firm but I’m willing to keep working at it.

Safety
The building across from our apartment houses the Baghdad offices of a political party. They have at least two armed guards patrolling outside with their Klashnakov rifles 24/7. Most offices, apartment buildings and hotels (and even places of worship) employ full-time armed security guards. It is a culturally acceptable in this part of the world for people to have at least a rifle or pistol as part of their household possessions. The U.S. forces here in Baghdad are of course armed with a bit more in their arsenal than rifles and pistols. And last but not least is the small number of insurgents whose weapons lack the sophistication of the U.S. forces, however, they never seem to lack for ammunition to use what weapons they’ve got. I have no way of knowing this, but on some level I’m convinced that I’m living in the most heavily armed city in the world.Excluding criminals, terrorists and psychopaths, my sense is that most people would describe their need to possess a weapon in terms of safety. I don’t have any specific instances of that here in Iraq, but back in America I have heard that from a number of people. I’ve heard, "I need a gun to feel safe in the areas of the city I have to work in." I’ve also heard, "I want to make sure my family is safe, so that’s why I keep a gun in my house." So the link between guns and safety might be a relevant point here in Baghdad as well. I’m trying to imagine what it would be like if we had a pistol or rifle in our CPT apartment here. Well, first I would need to imagine that we all had been trained in the use of the weapon. Having a gun and not knowing how to use it would be like having a car and not knowing how to drive. But assuming we did have training, would I feel safer than I do now? As with our neighbors at the political party office, I would assume we would need to keep the weapon "on display," so to speak. My sense it that people feel that letting "the bad guys" know that they have a weapon acts as a deterrent. So would I feel safer? I am clear that I would not feel safer.But heck, if I’m wrong and if in fact guns do create a feeling of safety, then I’m already living in the safest city in the world right now, so what do I have to worry about?
